Through determination, relentless perseverance, faith, and peaceful means Monica Wangu Wamwere prevailed and saw her son, Kenyan human rights activist and political prisoner Koigi wa Wamwere and many other imprisoned in the Kenyan jails released. She participated along with Noble Laureate Wangari Maathai in the 1992’s Mothers’ Hunger Strike. The strike became a success when after months of striking the women decided to undress in front of the governmental forces, which in the local tradition can be understood as setting a bad omen on the ones who see the mothers undressed. I saw the movie during the African Film Festival in New York city and I was awed by Wamwere’s focus and inner power. What a role model! I am proud of being mother today.
The post Monica Wangu Wamwere: A mother fighting for her son’s freedom first appeared on Happening Africa.
